Veronica Mars Season 3: Input Needed

Rob Thomas and the writers have been discussing ideas for season 3 of Veronica Mars. (They think, by the way, that there will be a season 3--but nothing's for sure yet, so keep watching to keep those numbers up!) Anyway, they were wondering what you would think if, rather than one large mystery, there were three smaller mysteries during season 3, divided into (approximately) 7, 7, and 8 episodes each. Rob thinks this might make it easier for new fans to start watching (there wouldn't be as much to catch up on), and also it would be easier to keep the momentum going during long breaks (like we just had, where there were reruns for about 2 months).

So, what do you think? If you watch the show, please state your opinion in a comment, which in turn I'll send to Rob. (This show really does listen to its fans, so your input is important.)

My opinion: I trust the writers to make it work if they do this, but I do enjoy the year-long mystery, with clues and hints and red herrings throughout all the episodes. (I've heard people complain, though, that there are too many episodes this season that aren't about the bus crash; having 3 mysteries would solve that problem.) If I had to vote, I'd say one big mystery--but I'm OK either way.

Definitely DEFINITELY one big mystery. If there's a concern about new viewers, just increase the "previously on..." time (last week's ep was a long and thorough review, IMO) and continue the Sunday night (or Tuesday night) repeats.

About the new viewers - the show needs more advertising. Hardly anyone knows about this show!

Continue the cultural and cult references. This is a huge selling point when I'm telling people about the show. Joss, Kevin and Ken Marino have all sucked people in.

Another thing I hear from many of my guy friends is, "There's too many dudes!" Sure they keep watching, but one thing they consistantly say is that there needs to be more eye candy. Sorry, I'm just passing on what they tell me.

(On a related note: No More Duncan. Please?)

And finally, whatever you do to the format or the schedule or the cast - DO NOT DUMB IT DOWN for mass consumption. Please, keep the show smart. Keep the fast-pace and the snark and the subtlety and the dry wit. The LCD already has "Deal or No Deal" don't give them VM, too.

Wow. I originally was just going to respond by saying, "Definitely one big mystery."

I have to vote to have something like the "Homicide" model of having layers of mysteries running at once: The mystery of the episode, a medium-arc mystery (akin to the multiple episode "cop shootings" 3-4 shows they'd do) and the uber arc (which was for "Homicide" was Bayliss' ongoing push to find the killer of Adina Watson). Doing little mysteries for seven episodies, then another for eight, then one more for seven will make for confusing viewing, plus it'll make VM seem if it's in smaller bubbles of action instead of the organic, interweaving everything-fits universe that it jobs in now. Real life isn't segmented into blocks. What affects A often intersects with B and C. A, B and C aren't seperate.

Anyway, a good "previously on Veronica Mars" will bring everyone up to speed just the same. What VM needs is a consistent airing schedule so it doesn't drop into reruns for a month and the plot gets cold.

Thanks for the comments, both of you. Amanda, I hope to god that they'll never dumb the show down! That would be a nightmare.

Hey Sheila, I missed you on the call last night. Were you just hanging back or did I come in too late?

I was there, but I couldn't get through to ask a question! The line was always busy. (I didn't try calling until about 5 minutes after the interview started, though--I think the rest of you were already waiting in "line" by then.) But I listened, and I enjoyed hearing all of you ask questions. :-)

Veronica Mars is by far my favourite show and I have to say I'm a huge fan of the year long mystery, but like you I trust the writers and I know, after seeing so many awesome episodes, that whatever they come up with it is going to be good!

Anyway, with one or three mysteries, all I want is a third season!

"Veronica Mars is smarter than me!"

I think it's better to keep the 1 main mystery, and every episode a little one, just like it's been in the past 2 seasons..

It is a great show, TV-series is my hobby, I watch 12 of them, but VM is my number one, followed by Grey's Anatomy !

So.. keep up VM for a 3rd season please !!

I like one big mystery with mini mysteries throughout format. I guess I am alone in wanting Duncan back - I do love the Logan and V interplay but Duncan is so adorable and now deliciously complex, no more blandness. PLEASE bring VM back for Season 3!!

i definitely think that it should stick with the 22 episode season long mystery. it is one of the coolest things about the show that every season they have a different mystery. the 3 mystery thing is ok i guess but the format they have now is like a trademark. i definitely think they should keep it the same as it has been and would be dissapointed to see it change.

I think that ONE big mystery has do be the way to go. I think that is what hooks people. It just makes you want to watch until the last episode. In addition to a bigger previously on V Mars, they should run more commercials, and they need to have a NEXT time on veronica mars.

i definitely like the one big mystery thing better than this whole idea of having three small mysteries throughout the season. the big mystery is what hooks people in.
i agree with everyon else...more advertising. im always talking about this show to my friends and they go "what show is this that you're talking about again?" this show is WAY too good to just be known by few!!! and i also would like to see a "next time on veronica mars".
veronica mars is my OBSESSION, ADDICTION, and PASSION. i hope the writers keep up the good work.

one last note - logan and veronica seriously should NOT break up. and duncan is old...not that interesting of a character anymore.

oh, how i love the long mysteries where they pour everything out in 3 episodes.... i just do. 3 mysteries...sounds so..uniformal. I have a feeling the "i'd-die-for-one-episode-of-veronica-mars club" is going to expand this fall when it appears after gilmore girls on the cw...kudos to Rob for bringing us LoVe back..kudos for moving duncan veryvery far away

Yeah Really one Mystery!
If it's not to late already cuz i think they already made season 3 =D But i live in Belgium here, so we see things a bit later than u guys! The show is also not that known here, but the people who know it, love it! So im I! I'm getting freaked here cuz season 2 just ended yesterday, and i actually missed season 1.. But the tv channel here switches alot from programs, like now they play Charmed instead of v mars, they also used to air will & grace, one three hill.. But i hope that Veronica Mars will be a keeper :)
