Leave It To Beaver--Again

All photos courtesy of UPN/Warner Bros

Here is my response to and questions about Not Pictured, the season 2 Veronica Mars finale.

RESPONSE:
Well, I was wrong about who crashed the bus! (Though I kind of like my Mrs. Goodman theory better than the one the writers came up with! Hee.) I like Evil Beaver, but my one complaint is that this seems too similar to last year’s finale--where Cassidy is key. In fact, you could have titled this episode “Leave It To Beaver” also.

  • During Veronica’s confrontation with Beaver, I kept expecting Beaver to say, “Yeah, I’m a killer, and I killed someone/raped you/screwed a lot of people out of their property, but I didn’t crash the bus.” I really thought Veronica was gonna be wrong. But then I realized that there was only 15 minutes left, so it really must be the real resolution. Did anyone else think that Cassidy was a fake out?
  • What does this show have against fake deer, anyway? They get shot, thrown at people…
  • Veronica’s dream boyfriend is Logan! OMG, Veronica’s real-life boyfriend is Logan! Squee! (What an amazing acting job—again—by Jason Dohring. And Kristin Bell, for that matter. Actually, good acting all around. Harry Hamlin is so, so evil.)

  • Someone remind me why Dick didn’t graduate…he didn’t pass a class, right? Was it science?
  • Did anyone else think, when Logan took the gun away from Veronica, that he was going to say, “You’re not a killer—but I am” and blow Cassidy away? Both my husband and I thought that.
  • Everyone evil or icky on the show was wearing a tacky collarless jacket: Vinnie (it’s his trademark ‘80s jacket), Aaron Echolls (his was an upscale, leather one), and Cassidy. IT’S AN UGLY JACKET GANG! Hee.

  • I loved that Duncan and Clarence killed Aaron. Such a perfect resolution to Lilly's murder.
  • Dick’s "Dungeons and Dragons" speech was so funny—and perfectly delivered, as usual. I really hope that Ryan Hansen comes back again next year—he’s fabulous.
  • You gotta love when Cassidy was gonna jump. Logan says, “Cassidy, don’t!” Cassidy says, “Why not?” and Logan comes up blank. (Uhh...because...uh...dude, I got nothin’. OK, jump.) That made me smile during an otherwise dramatic scene.
  • They dealt with Veronica's rape! I was cranky that last year, by making V's rape a non-rape, that they kind of side-stepped the problem. Nice that they addressed it and didn't back down this time. (Veronica still hasn't dealt with Dick yet, though. After all, her rape was set up by him.)
  • It’s a little unsettling to me that all three of the boys that Curly abused ended up gay or at least gay-curious (except maybe Beaver? We’re not sure in his case). Does that seem a little odd to anyone else? (You don't "turn gay" by being molested, people--and I hope that's not the implication here.)
  • ETA: LAMB IS NOT DEAD! He was never in NV, never on the plane. Why do people think this?!

THE EVIL THINGS BEAVER DID:
Let me know if I’m forgetting anything!
  • Raped Veronica
  • Set up his dad (nice touch, by the way)
  • Killed Curly
  • Used Mac (why???)
  • Blew up the bus
  • Blew up Woody’s plane
  • Ran a property scam

REMAINING QUESTIONS:
There’s no “Spy Pen” this year, but there are quite a few things that are unresolved—in my mind, at least. If you can resolve any of these for me, please let me know!

  • Who is Sally, the person Beaver threatened Dick about in Ain’t No Magic Mountain High Enough? What kind of hold did Beaver have over Dick? (Hee.)
  • What’s up with G-G-G-Gia’s parents and little brother? Are her parents (especially mom) just weird neat freaks, or was something else going on?
  • Grace Manning: Is she still living in the house with her abusive father? Has Mr. Manning changed his ways? It’s implied that Lamb was watching over the house…but that doesn’t seem like a sufficient conclusion to me.
  • Was Lucky also abused by Woody? It doesn’t seem likely anymore. If not, why was he washing his feet with bleach? Why was he stalking Gia? If not Lucky, then who sent the email (of the two bush-crash victims’ voices) to Woody? Was it Beaver?
  • How did Beaver convince the PCHers that Curly blew up the bus?

All photos courtesy of UPN/Warner Bros
  • Why did the Mannings put up money for Woody’s capture? There’s gotta be something more here that we don’t know—right? Otherwise I think we have a total lack of clarity about the Mannings. They’re protective of their daughters—yet they encouraged a relationship between Meg and the obviously insane Lucky? How would catching Woody help them?
  • Who stole Cliff’s briefcase and why? I guess we can assume Aaron’s cellmate stole it, at Aaron’s request—but what info did he gain? How did it help his trial?
  • Why was Beaver dating Mac? Did he actually like her, or was he just using her? I understand why he might steal her money and cell phone—but why did he take her clothes? ETA: Duh, he stole her clothes so she wouldn't follow him! I've seen a lot of speculation on whether or not Beaver raped Mac. I'm not sure why people think this, frankly--I don't believe it. I think she's traumatized because someone she really loved was, in her mind, playing a joke on her. Left her alone without her clothes--and without her hopes of a perfect night, perfect relationship.
  • Why didn’t Veronica and her dad bring down Lamb? They have his bribery of Cook recorded—and now that Cook’s game throwing is out in the open, the Mars family should nail Lamb. Er, so to speak.
  • So, Jackie said she used to be on drugs…is she lying? Is she actually still an addict? We saw her taking something at least once this season. Or was that a writer's mistake? (Maybe it was aspirin because Jackie had a headache?)
  • Is there something wrong with the timeline of Jackie’s story? She says her son is two, and after he was born she was sent to California…but I thought, early in the season, it was implied that she just got to Neptune. That would mean only 10 months or so had passed. Where was she during the first year of her son's life? ETA: And why does she lie to her dad about going to Paris? Her dad knows her past. Or did she ask her dad to lie to Wallace? Ugh, muddy, muddy.
  • Will Veronica let Duncan know that he (and the baby!) need STD treatment? If V and D had sex right after Cassidy raped her (EWWW! That is so disgusting), then presumably Duncan could have caught it, and then Meg, and then the baby. ETA: Ugh, and if Woody had an STD twice...maybe he had it, gave it to Beaver, got cured...then recaught it from Beaver. How totally disgusting.
  • The biggest question of all: AUGH, we still don’t know where Veronica is going to college!!! (Well, we know...but the show didn't tell us!) Or Logan (if he’s going)! Or Mac! (Come one, Mac and V roommates!) Or what Dick’s doing next year (I’m assuming he’s going to summer school to get his degree, but not to college).
  • ETA: A question brought up at TWOP: How did Lilly's blood get on Aaron's oscar??? (This just may be this year's spy pen, folks!)
Regarding the mini-cliffhanger, I don't think Mr. Mars would bail on Veronica for money, so I don't think it was tons of cash that Kendall had in her briefcase. So what does she have? I can't wait to find out--and I love the implication that Charisma will be back next year! ETA: I've seen theories that she wants Keith to help her escape charges of murdering Aaron (she was in the room, after all)--but Keith would no way find that important enought to stand up Veronica for. I'm also hopeful that we'll get more resolution with Lucky and Weevil (who set him up? Or are those boys actually innocent witnesses?) next season.

I would not be shocked if this isn't used at some point as Lamb and Daddy Mars square of again.

Was Lucky also abused by Woody? It doesn’t seem likely anymore. If not, why was he washing his feet with bleach? Why was he stalking Gia? If not Lucky, then who sent the email (of the two bush-crash victims’ voices) to Woody?

Likely yes. The whole bleach thing could be from his post-war instablity. Yet, some abuse victims go through a ritualistic cleaning thing that borders on the severe.

I think Beaver was careful in sending the notes to Woody as a ghost of abuse past if Lucky didn't do it.

As for stalking Gia, it makes sense in a weird way. Lucky is getting back at Woody through Gia. I also imagine Lucky was stalking everyone in the family, waiting for that right moment to set off his presents.

What’s up with Gia’s parents and little brother? Are her parents (especially mom) just weird neat freaks, or was something else going on?

Yeah, that got dropped as something bigger. I think that was a outlier for VM and the audience that something's evil at Casa Del Goodman.

Why was Beaver dating Mac? Did he actually like her, or was he just using her? I understand why he might steal her money and cell phone—but why did he take her clothes?

Could be both. He could have liked her, trying to be find some sense of normal. And he could be using her to keep tabs on VM, who is obviously the only human being in Neptune smart enough to put all the pieces together.

But they weren't Lucky's "presents" after all--they were Beaver's. I wonder if Lucky was abused--Woody only chose boys without good father figures (*shudder*), and we don't know anything about Lucky's family. Could be that Lucky was just nanners, and fixated on Ga-ga-ga-Gia.

All good questions!

As far as I could tell, the Mannings offerred reward money for Woody's capture because once Woody skipped town, everyone believed he was the one caused the bus crash.

I also think it was mentioned in a previous episode that Mac is going to Hearst.

The new Ask Ausiello has Rob Thomas' answers to some questions that arose from the season finale.
